The connection between concussion recovery & healing shock trauma #tbi #nervoussystemregulation
The question: "Can this type of work be done alongside concussion recovery (predominantly from cervical instability) or would it be too much for the nervous system?" The short answer: IT DEPENDS! And, individual circumstances aside, it mostly depends on what “the work” actually is. Watch this video and check out the recommended resources linked below to learn more!

Have we "hijacked" the vagus nerve? #nervoussystemregulation #polyvagaltheory

The concept and suggestion that we can simply stimulate and "tone" the vagus nerve so as to regulate and "heal" it (via an electrical device or deep breathing exercise, say), is ill-informed to say the least. Irene: I had an “accident” 3-4 years ago where a kid in a Honda brake checked me into a 4’ thick concrete barrier head on at 50 mph in my Dodge pickup. I definitely had a concussion. At the time I had 7 lawsuits, a $50,000 IRS penalty, a narcissist girlfriend that was trying to get me in prison, losing my house- among other things. My nervous system is shot. I sleep 3-4 hours a night. I am chronically depressed. I saw a psychiatrist for 2 years and learned about narcissists (every woman that’s been in my life and my entire family are narcissists). But after 2 years I am not much better. I used to live in an Oceanview home in San Diego that I built myself- now I live in a shipping container in the Arizona desert. Every morning I have to crawl out of a pit of despair. I can go on but you get the point. Can you help me? PS- I don’t drink, smoke, of do drugs. I stoped taking antidepressants as they didn’t help.

You shouldn't make a blanket statement like meditation won't heal your trauma, all because of one persons experience. Meditation has worked for me, I'm better but still along way to go, but still, it helped me. You're not supposed to meditate to get better, this isn't how it works. You can't just get rid of trauma, trauma is something that requires present moment awareness in order to be with the trauma. Having dissociation doesn't enable this, but meditation if integrated before sleep and after you wake up could help the mind to associate with your awareness as being less threatening, over time increasing the mind to develop a healthier connection with who you are, which ultimately will rewire your brain physically so you become who you were meant to be without the trauma.

What's nervous system disregulation? I was left in my crib so long until I crawled out by myself. And then they dropped it down to the floor so the walls would be higher and I still climbed out. And then went on to want to do what i wanted as much as possible.

Hi Irene, I participated in a clinic 7 weeks into SBSM (Cognitive FX in Provo UT) that produced phenomenal results in improving cognitive function and I would like to offer some perspective on what you have shared here. First, the groundwork laid by SBSM was pivotal in setting the stage for my success at the clinic. Second, this clinic is the only one I found in the country that didn’t medicate as part of their program, and in fact employed SE principles in their therapy. Third, I think you need to be careful when you characterize cognitive therapies as “crazy” because if the client is well grounded from working with SE awareness, they can achieve amazing success regaining brain function and cognitive health. My head trauma originated with years of brutal abuse by an enraged alcoholic parent from age 8 months through 8 years followed by three head injuries sustained in my teens and early adulthood. I am now 67 and was experiencing very troubling mental decline where my brain would clamp down and not allow me to access function. The 2 weeks of cognitive therapies in between the functional MRIs were indeed intense but unimaginably transformative. I would absolutely recommend SBSM as many rounds as necessary to get as much regulation on board as possible, but I would not dismiss the remarkable benefits that can be achieved by intensive cognitive exercises. The two really do fit well together.

About freeze response, If you don't know whether you are in a freeze or not, you ARE in a freeze response. It means you need more practice and then you will get out of this freeze slavery. It is a slavery untill you get enough regulation. ❤just practise every single day. Every day! It takes time.

Dear Irene, last October i started watching your videos. I started doing orienting, other somatic exercises. All by myself because I couldn't afford to pay SBSM. I'm much better now, my nervous system is much more resilient. Though I can see much childhood trauma which doesn't leave me. But at last I can go to a supermarket without crying because of a constant alertness. So thank you.
